Dr. Moore

Dear El Segundo Community, Parents, Students, Faculty and Support Staff,

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year at ESUSD! While this is definitely a year without precedent, we are excited you are back with us on this educational journey. Although we begin the school year exclusively online, we can’t wait to have students back in the classroom when it is safe to do so.

In July, ESUSD families were given the option between two learning models in preparation for when the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health deems schools may safely open again for in-person instruction.

We know the COVID-19 global pandemic is exceptionally challenging for everyone, however, be assured that ESUSD has taken steps to improve our distance learning model and delivery. Your teachers and counselors worked tirelessly during the summer break preparing our virtual classrooms, selecting learning management platforms, and planning curriculum for our students. We care about our students and want to ensure they have all the tools and resources needed for academic success. We know it is important to set appropriate conditions for learning so students feel connected and can excel and thrive.

ESUSD’s key areas of academic focus this year, are implementing the Board of Education’s 2020-2024 Goals for Our Future, furthering Social Emotional Learning via the RULER Approach, and developing student competencies as outlined in our Graduate Profile.

ESUSD is honored to be recognized each year by outside agencies with awards and accolades that reflect the district’s educational excellence. We are especially proud to be recognized as a “distinguished district” for exemplary STEM education by Project Lead The Way (PLTW), one of only two districts honored in the state of California and one of 24 in the nation. PLTW aligns with our Graduate Profile and provides transformative learning experiences for K-12 students and teachers through innovative Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) curriculum. Since 2015, all grade levels at ESUSD have incorporated PLTW into their curriculum, which includes the high school Engineering and Biomedical Science career pathways (introduced in 2011-2012). As students progress through grades K-12, they are empowered by PLTW curriculum to engage in problem solving and process thinking, develop technical knowledge and skills, build communication skills, and explore career opportunities.

We look forward to returning to the classroom with our students using the hybrid learning model when the county directs that schools may reopen. In the meantime, we are planning and preparing for the required health and safety protocols for in-person instruction, and we remain committed to providing ESUSD students with a comprehensive educational experience!

Warmest Regards,

Melissa Moore, Ed.D.
